5th Medical Mission for 2018 at NIA Road

VIDES Philippines served about 200 patients who came from the marginalized community along NIA Road, Quezon City last Saturday, October 20, 2018. Five doctors and one nurse provided free medical consultation to kids and adults. Other activities such as medicine and food distribution, story telling, and getting-to-know sessions were also conducted. Kids also went home with hygiene product giveaways such as toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and lotion.

We wish to thank the following individuals for making the 5th VIDES Medical Mission for 2018 a success: Dr Dinah Pearl Pital, Dr Vernaliza Pasol, Dr Tatum Barong and Dr Czarina Pabustan of the National Children’s Hospital; Dr Gerosalyn B. Ebdane; VIDES Registered Nurse Janet Payoyo; Kagawad Edwin "Doc" Bernardo; and the 27 VIDES volunteers who joined the event.

Our gratitude also goes to VIDES Board Member Marian Belarmino and her mother, Reza Belarmino, for coordinating with the community and the barangay officials.

Of course, we would also like to thank Sr. Mabel Pilar FMA and Sr Josefina Carrasco FMA for their unwavering support.

Encounter with Sr Mabel Pilar FMA: Responding to the Call to be Holy

Last October 13, 2018, VIDES volunteers had the opportunity to listen to the inspiring message of the Provincial Superior of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians in the Philippines and Papua New Guinea.

Sr Mabel R. Pilar FMA urged the volunteers to respond to Pope Francis' call to go to the peripheries and to be holy.   She emphasized the importance of catechism in today's fast-changing world and commended VIDES Philippines for its courageous efforts of bringing the message of God's love to the marginalized.

Sr Mabel explained that it is possible for ordinary people to be holy.  Every one can respond to the Pope's call to sanctification by doing ordinary tasks extraordinarily well and with  integrity. She underscored that there are many opportunities to sanctify our daily lives in spite of all the challenges.  For instance, mothers and fathers are called to be good parents.  Teachers are called to be good educators. Being cheerful as you work and go about your day may also be considered as holiness.

She also called on the volunteers to strengthen their spiritual life by praying, attending mass, and going to confession regularly.  She also enjoined them to strengthen their community life by continuously supporting and building each other as they serve the underprivileged.
